Leather Thickness Selection for Bushcraft Backpacks
When it comes to crafting high-quality bushcraft backpacks, the choice of leather thickness is crucial. At 99 Percent Handmade, we take pride in our meticulous selection process to ensure our backpacks are not only durable but also tailored to our customers' needs. Here's how we determine the appropriate leather thickness for different parts of our bushcraft backpacks.
Heavy Load Areas
For areas of the backpack that bear heavy loads and are made solely of leather, we use 2 mm thick leather. This thickness provides the necessary strength and durability to withstand the stress of carrying heavy gear.
Areas Reinforced with Canvas
In sections where leather is supported by a layer of canvas fabric, we opt for 1.5 mm thick leather. The combination of leather and canvas provides a dual-layer of durability, making it sufficient to handle substantial weight without compromising flexibility.
Connection Points
For connection points that don't bear significant load, such as the flaps of front pockets, we use leather ranging from 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm in thickness. These areas require less reinforcement, allowing us to use thinner leather without sacrificing functionality.
Shoulder Straps and Flaps
The shoulder straps and the flaps they connect to need to distribute weight evenly across the backpack. For these critical sections, we use a minimum of 1.5 mm thick leather, sometimes opting for up to 2 mm for added support. In some cases, we stitch two pieces of leather together to enhance strength, depending on the backpack's size and the customer's preferences.
Customization and Craftsmanship
Every bushcraft backpack we create is a testament to our commitment to quality and customization. We evaluate the backpack's size, intended use, and the customer's leather choice to determine the optimal thickness for each component. Not every leather is suitable for every backpack, and making these adjustments is part of our expertise.
Our goal is to ensure that each backpack is not only functional and durable but also uniquely crafted to meet the individual needs of our customers. At 99 Percent Handmade, all our bushcraft backpacks are made by hand, ensuring a personal touch and attention to detail in every piece.
